Recognised as the University of the Year for Student Support in the 2025 Daily Mail University Guide, the University of Sunderland is committed to placing student wellbeing at the heart of its mission. This award highlights their proactive approach, ensuring every learner has the resources to reach their full potential, regardless of personal or academic challenges.

I wanted to find out how they've achieved this and the role technology has in their dedication to accessible learning and student success.

One of the key figures driving this support is Ruth Brown, Student Support Manager for Disability, Finance, and Inclusion. A former Sunderland student, Ruth understands the barriers students face – from managing busy timetables and handling stress to juggling studies and social life.

The University of Sunderland recognises that every student's needs are unique, even among those with the same diagnosis. That's why they work closely with students to create bespoke Student Support Plans, outlining recommendations and providing staff with the information they need to offer tailored support. With around 2,000 students accessing support from the team, their approach is both strategic and holistic – something I was keen to explore further in my conversation with Ruth.

Many students rely on Disabled Students' Allowance (DSA) to access crucial support, but waiting times for funding can be lengthy. The student support team also works with students who don't qualify for DSA, such as those on short courses or apprenticeships.

Technology helps to bridge this gap, ensuring students aren't left struggling while their formal provisions are being put in place; however, while built-in tools such as those in Microsoft 365 help some students, others require more tailored solutions.

Ruth and her team ensure that any tech introduced is the most effective option for that individual, especially considering that students already manage multiple platforms and systems.

“It's a fine balance when adding another piece of software," Ruth explains. “It has to be a good fit for that student's needs, or it just adds to their admin stress.”

This thinking led Ruth to purchase Booost licences that her team could give out to students who they felt would benefit from the app’s smart time management and expert support.

Booost fits seamlessly into their lives, providing just enough structure without being overwhelming.

“Not every student needs intensive support – sometimes, all they need is a light touch,” Ruth says. “Booost fits seamlessly into their lives, providing just enough structure without being overwhelming.”

University life can be demanding, especially for mature students, apprentices, and part-time learners who make up a considerable portion of Sunderland's student body. Many balance family and work commitments alongside their studies, making time management challenging. As a result, students often procrastinate, leaving large, intimidating tasks until the last minute.

This is where Booost proves invaluable.

Many students tend to avoid complex tasks, only to feel stressed when deadlines approach. Booost takes that pressure off them.

“Many students tend to avoid complex tasks, only to feel stressed when deadlines approach. Booost takes that pressure off them. The task lists, particularly with added checklists, break everything down into smaller steps.”

Instead of having to-do lists scattered across notebooks and emails, Booost brings everything together in one organised, easy-to-use system, helping students stay on top of their workload. Ruth recalls one student with ADHD who was “obsessed" with Booost after realising how much easier it made managing coursework.

“They feel more in control and use it successfully alongside their study skills tutor.”

By reducing mental clutter, Booost allows students to focus on learning rather than logistics, which helps cut down on missed deadlines, late-night cramming, and last-minute extension requests.

“Instead of all these tasks rolling around in their minds taking up brain space, Booost keeps it all manageable.”

In Sunderland's diverse community, the university's blend of personalised care and technology helps students overcome challenges and take control of their learning. With continuous support and innovative solutions, the University of Sunderland sets a high standard for student care, ensuring every student has the tools they need to succeed.
